Why indeed!
Christmas is on it’s way…Yes, yes I know we have three months to go but with Christmas cards in shops and mince pies being sold in Cooperative Supermarkets (and yes it is an affront to mankind!)…well m,y though have turned to the yule period. I am a Christian so the Christmas is an important time for me, my friends, my community and of course my faith.
It was really Charles Dickens that gave us the Christmas we have now, many of the traditions come from the Victorian Era when Church, faith and life were inextricably linked.
Many of these traditions were either started or revived by Charles Dickens, this is due to the success of ‘A Christmas Carol’ and all the wonderful characters of Scrooge and the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. It is a book that I have read every Christmas for the last decade, for me it is a tradition
I now have a family of my own and long to make Christmas not just a spiritual time but a traditional one as well.
So with that mind my intention is too link a specific Victorian Christmas blog with all things of the Yule period to London By Gaslight…
Time was with most of us, when Christmas Day, encircling all our limited world like a magic ring, left nothing out for us to miss or seek; bound together all our home enjoyments, affections, and hopes; grouped everything and everyone round the Christmas fire, and make the little picture shining in our bright young eyes, complete.
